A few mistakes made it through in the final edit, the ending isn't supposed to have that 10 second delay for darkness, and some text and images pop up outta nowhere with no context. Sorry about that folks!

I'm the hardcore grump. I don't enjoy the DM deciding how my character feels or acts. I'm ok with being moderated in a framework, but if my DM starts RPing my character as sloppy when they arent it feels like a hijacking. Otherwise great video.

I know this is an old video but this made me realize why I love my current campaign. I've played many over the years and yet I never felt the want to actively finish one. I'd feel bored after a while, zone out, not care about other characters... But this campaign is different. And watching this video made me understand why: our current DM took a lot of inspiration in her DMing from Matt Mercer. The different voices and interesting secondary characters, actively putting our backstories in the main story, describing the world around and every actions we take sometimes even adding some onomatopoeia... Seriously, I'm someone very roleplay heavy and it's such a pleasure and I can't wait for our weekly sessions! I am totally going to take notes for the next time I DM. This is brillant!

The first time players campaign finished a minor quest and all cheered together, I will never forget that feeling! They simply had to help a young kid slay a bear for his father. The moment when the kids dagger finally ended the bear, everyone celebrated and started hyping up the kid! The best feeling for me as a new DM is getting that real emotion out of my players. When you know they're warming up to your world and it's NPCs....

This makes me thinks of AVENTURES DM, AVENTURES it's a french RPG whixh was first made for a Show on the youtube chanel "Bazard du grenier" (and actualy came out as a real RPG Book after season 4) The DM was excellent he is also really well known amongst the tabletop players in France since him and his teams are the brain behind a lot of Tabletop games and RPG. Actualy they are working on the Gotham investigation RPG along with Warner Bros.

I do like, Matt. But, maybe I am a bit too old... The environmental storytelling is really good, and at times, having space to describe your character's actions instead of having the DM basically act out a lot of it, is kind of nice. That said, to be fair, when a character ends an enemy, he always gives them space to describe it themselves. But at times, it does feel like the DM is making 80% of the narrative, instead of having a more cooperative sort of deal going on. Okay, yes I'm old. But it is what it is. Still like Matt, though - but please, take notes from the guy, but be your own DM. You'll find that you'll provide a unique experience to your players, and that is what makes - or used to make - D&D so very special, even if you played in three different campaigns in one weekend.

Using the players' backstories to find things villains can use "against" them is something my players HATE, even though it makes them super engaged and it makes defeating the villain more satisfying and the game more fun. That's right, they HATE it, but it also makes the game more fun. The result is that, over time, some players I know have adopted a "minimalist" backstory in which their orphaned PC invariably has no roots and passed through life without making either friends or enemies. Remarkably, this is true even if they have a 20 Charisma. My counter-reaction is to reward people for making NPCs and "bonds" that actually motivate their characters (whether I use them or not) by awarding "action points" (like the old 3.5 Eberron mechanic) that let their characters do things outside the standard rules. That solves the "friendless orphan" problem, but they still hate it when their loved ones, or hometown, or old military unit or whatnot is potentially under threat and only they can save things.

My comment and own opinion. Matt Mercer and the cast have to be aware they are playing (and sharing) their D&D times not just for their own fun but also have an audience. The balance Matt keeps by not just "ruling" the game for them, but also to make it entertaining for people who is watching is already worth of mention. He, as a DM, doesn't only keep an eye on rules and helps things to move on as smoothly as possible, also tells the story, as a narrator, so everyone naturally gets into role, and that's amazing from the stand point of D&D and a D&D show.

As a DM of over 25 years, I learned these tips and tricks a long time ago... And no, I don't watch Critical Role, never have (I have seen a handful of short clips, mostly just out of context funny moments that pop up occasionally in my ARpulse suggestions while I'm looking for dungeon terrain build ideas), nor do I intend to. Not for any reason in particular, but when people fawn over and completely lose their minds over something to the point of unhealthy obsession... Yeah, that's the fastest way to completely turn me off to that thing...

In my first campaign, the dm had this "merchant/alchemist" npc that could make "any kind of item upon request", the thing is though, he will charge exorbitant price for it and make us gather a lot absurdly homebrewed material which we, until now, never found yet. Also every time you visit him, he will just flexes his expensive homebrew wares like a door to door salesman non stop, like how he whipped out a bell that could rewind time, forcibly teleport people to his shop, or snatch the party barbarian's treasure. He even has a "membership" system. And i kid you not that some of his item, especially the cheap one could even potentially be scam (the dm said himself it will depends on his mood) there's even this peanut thing, that when you ingested it, you must roll a dice, and depending on the result you can: gain benefit of long rest, instant level up and gain bonus points to abilities, or die because it exploded in your stomach. One of the party is a researcher of magic, he wanted to improvise by attempting to analyze and refine the peanut using some kind of purifying/ refining magic circle, in order minimizing the negative effect and possibly improve the positive effects. Aand, no, he were told to make 3 checks consecutively and failed at the last one, so he just got told "you feel that you better not mess around with this thing, since it is his (the alchemist) wares" Well to be fair, maybe the dm considered it as overpowered improvisation since we're only level 5? But 3 checks ? By the Gods but what grinds my gear the most is since that npc is so annoying, we never want to visit him anymore. BUT THEN, the DM make that bloody all-capable-alchemist could and will telepathically speaks to the party wherever we are and hit us with "because you've made contact with him, so now he could magically connect to your consciousness" shenanigans. Well, you guess it, he telepathically flexes his ware and mocking the party for not buying his wares that "could solve the party's problem" from time to time Honestly, It feels like one of those dumb pop up ads on some shady websites. Most of the party member including me were new, this is the first campaign for the most of us, so there may be a lot of things we don't know yet. Like maybe the 3 consecutive checks are actually a thing ? This rant could continue into an even longer one, but maybe I shouldn't elaborate more... well i still appreciate him (DM) for going out his way to introduce us to dnd, setting up and hosting campaign, etc tho, pretty sure setting up story, etc isn't easy.

I don't watch critical role, though I do have a great respect for its players and DM. The thing is, I've been DMing for over a decade. All this stuff that everyone is amazed by that Matt does, describing every hit, doing voices, roaring like a madman, that just feels like the minimum expectation for me. Stuff that I've been doing for years. Oh yeah, he does it VERY well. Of course his voices and acting are great, he's a professional. I'm just glad that everyone has a good example to look up to now. Good DMs can be hard to find IRL, so many people can probably go years of playing D&D without ever knowing what a GOOD DM is supposed to do.

Alas, I haven't the time to watch Critical Role. I'm too busy running my own campaign. ^^ That said, it's good to hear more people are getting into gaming for the narrative. People who just want to run around and do bajillions of damage to demon lords and take over gods' home planes simply because their stats are high enough and the story can go "tell" itself are really doing themselves a disservice, and frankly aren't enjoyable companions at a narrative table.

If you think putting effort into making a character is "a chore" then you simply should not be the one DMing. The fact of the matter is the DMing does take work, and DMs that think they can run a game without doing any preparation always fail.

  89. HoursOfOrigin

Yeah I have been a DM for god, well over 15 years now. It takes a strategy to be a good DM and most of your ability to be a good DM is part of what your table is capable of. Sure, the rules can say this or that, but there are instances where the rules do interfere with the flow of the game or the challenge can actually be impossible should a new player make certain decisions. The number one thing I see bad DM's do is that they are afraid to be punishing when the table is derping around aimlessly, but they stick to the bounds of the rules too much losing the sake of fun. One annoying thing I have seen is that some DM's just throw their table of new players to the wolves when it eventually becomes a bunch of new characters being made when they die from bad decisions and this just eats up more time at the table and becomes frustrating for everyone. I have been a DM for 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and 5e. I live by the code that Gygax has set in place for the game when I DM, that the rules are simply guidelines, and the true rules of the game are all up to the imagination and up to DM discretion. A true DM goes outside the realm of rules and is able to make even the most challenging places of a quest or dungeon into a fun time, even if the BBEG is extremely hard to beat. They should be able to inspire their players that just because your party failed and wiped trying to surpass Tomb of Horrors, doesn't mean that you can't try again with new characters who face different challenges on their journey to being able to face that absolute monster of a dungeon. Last and definitely not least, a good DM should be able to take constructive criticism from their players. I see it all the time where a DM gets comments from the table about how things could be better or just more fun in general, all in good faith, and it's like trying to punch a brick wall. The best thing you can possibly do as a DM is to understand that nobody is perfect and that even you as a DM can be better with criticism from another perspective. This is exactly why every time I end a session at my table, I ask ALL of my players if they had a good time and if there was anything they liked or disliked. Voice acting is definitely a plus in terms of entertainment, but the main thing is that your table is having fun.

I know this is an older video but for any new DM's watching this: Mr. Mercer is an incredible DM to be sure. However, and Mercer has discussed this at length as well, you don't have to be EXACTLY like him. It's important to go your own way on a story. Certainly pull techniques like being very descriptive, and throwing plot hooks from a character's backstory, but don't just straight up copy him. The reason he does so well is that his games have soul, the players are trained actors and they roleplay really well because they've been professionally trained to do so and because they are invested in the world Mercer builds. If you completely copy the world it loses some of that whimsy and charm, it begins to feel hollow because it isn't your own.

It’s cool to see him out of character(s) too. Like, in conversations he’ll just add a little remark and mostly he’s just listening, doesn’t seem to like too much attention. And then he becomes the DM and he SHINES

Another thing you can see, is he is not only describing things with his words, he is using hand motions, and acting out the scenes, interacting with the players, a great example of this is in the scene with the merchant, where he handed one of the players an imaginary box

I don't know, I just don't care for his style of Game Mastering. It makes me cringe a little when he's going over the top with his voice acting and descriptions. Also, and I know this has been talked about elsewhere, I don't like anyone to narrate for me what my character is feeling, thinking, reacting or how they do stuff in the game. As a player, that's MY job. I get it, for this kind of entertainment, keeping the game running smoothly by having one person basically do all that makes sense, but I wouldn't want a game master to do that to me. I've stopped going to games for that very reason.
